a very-long-chain (3R)-3-hydroxyacyl-CoA + NADP+ ⇌ a very-long-chain 3-oxoacyl-CoA + NADPH + H+

This microsomal complex extends palmitoyl-CoA and stearoyl-CoA (and their modified forms) to very-long-chain acyl CoAs.
