Krisiscm

Krisiscm is a new faith that has recently branched off christianity and is quikkly growing popular amoung young people. The religion entails people not praying to any God but they seek guidence from there leader 'Kris'this kris is the founding father of Krisicism and is the koolest kid on the block. He is acompanied by his fellow devoted Krisicists 'Spunky'(Jesus) and 'Webby-Wang'(Holy Spirit) and Nanikins (Virgin Chik)...

Ponni Rice

'Ponni' is a rice grown largely in the Indian state of Tamilnadu in the Cauvery delta regions around Tanjavur.

The river Cauvery is also referred to as Ponni in the South and the name reflects the geographic region where it is grown.

Cleophus Prince Jr.

Cleophus Prince Jr. is an African-American serial killer who was convicted, and sentenced to death, in 1993 for the murders of 6 white women in San Diego County during 1990: Tiffany Schultz, Janene Weinhold, Holly Tarr, Elissa Keller, and Pamela and Amber Clark (mother and daughter). Prince is unusual not only because he's an African-America serial killer, but because he killed women of a different race.

Assyrian Mythology Tarr

Tarr (often pronounced: Ta-ruh)is a figure in Assyrian Mythology. Tarr was believed to be an ancient warrior with unmatched courage and strength that was superhuman. Tarr fought to defend the Assyrian people from threats within Assyria and around it's borders. Tarr's epic battles against tyrannous Kings, rulers and evil doers of the time are said to be the material of Assyrian tales for young and old. Tarr is often mentioned in stories alongside Assyrian King Ninios.

While there is not a great amount of detail available on Tarr. It is said that on rare occasion the name is passed along to modern day Assyrian males when a parent or family member feels that they carry a special strength within them.

Stargazer-Rainbow

Stargazer is a song written by Ronnie James Dio and Ritchie Blackmore for their band's album Rainbow Rising. The song itself is about a wizard who believes he can fly and so gets some people to build a tower of stone to the top of the world and jumps off it and ends up not being able to fly and hitting the ground and dying freeing all the slaves. This song is known for the strength of Dio's voice Blackmore's mesmeric sounding guitar and the powerful drumming of Cozy Powell.

My Own Worst Enemy (Scrubs episode)

J.D. and Elliot are laying on a cot, about to kiss, while J.D. relfects on how terribly wrong this could go, by one of them backing out at the last second, leaving the other kissing air. As their eyes close, Elliot magically assumes a position on the opposite side of the room from J.D. She goes to visit Carla and Turk about her relationship problems, as a "crystalized moment" has caused her to realize she doesn't want to marry Keith. She reveales this to Keith in the parking lot, with the majority of the Sacred Heart staff observng through the windows. Meanwhile, Dr. Cox and Turk are dealing with their patient Joe, who is so friendly, even Dr. Cox takes a liking to him. Initally, Dr. Cox diagnoses him with lyme disease. Unfortunately, they cannot find what's wrong with Joe. After tricking Dr. Kelso into telling Joe he would have to be discharged, Kelso also realizes that they must find a way to help Joe. At the same time, Elliot and Keith reunite, to some degree, when they make out as Keith is moving out of Elliot's apartment. While brainstorming what's wrong, Dr. Beardface causes a revelation in Dr. Cox. After shaving Joe's head, they discover the tick bite that caused actualy lyme disease. At this time, J.D. also antagonizes Janitor, as he does not believe he has a girlfriend named "Lady." Elliot and Keith also break up again, with J.D saying that he does not feel bad about it, and he has never really liked Keith. The episode ends with J.D. returning home, commenting on how even though he does not love Kim, and probably never will, he knows he is destined to stay with her forever because there is a child involved.

Madhya Pradesh Water Sector Restructuring Project

In the area of water management a new concept has developed in Madhya Pradesh. A framework is being prepared with the conventional methods of water management to provide permanent and sustainable holistic development and progress of the state. Irrigation projects of Madhya Pradesh which are not irrigating with their full potential require renovation of dams and their canals. The tireless efforts of the State Government to modernize the dams and canals by applying new techniques were thwarted due to paucity of funds. The World Bank has agreed to provide the financial help to the State Government for modernization of irrigation schemes. The State Government has included the line departments such as agriculture, horticulture, veterinary and fisheries to provide benefits to the cultivators for the sustainable development to the water sector of the state. An agreement was signed between the state government and the World Bank for modernization of 654 schemes in six years from January 2005 to March 2011 at the cost of Rs.1919 crores. This project is working under the Water Resources Department of the Government of Madhya Pradesh. The Project Implementation and Coordination Unit (PICU) is established for the implementation of the project. This project is being implemented in thirty districts covering five river basins such as Ken, Chambal, Betwa, Tons and Sindh. The project will benefit the families of five lac farmers covering an area of 4,95,000 hectares. The benefited districts are Indore, Neemuch, Mandsaur, Shajapur, Rajgarh, Bhind, Morena, Sheopur, Gwalior, Datia, Shivpuri,Guna, Vidisha, Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Rewa, Panna, Damoh, Ashoknagar,Bhopal, Sehore, Sidhi, Satna, Katni, Raisen, Sagar, Dewas, Dhar, Ratlam and Ujjain. The schemes include 5 Major, with irrigable area more than 10,000 hectares; 31 Medium, with irrigable area between 2000 and 10,000 hectares; and remaining 618 Minor irrigation schemes. The schemes which will be modernized in this project were constructed before 1986. The experts of water resources, agriculture, veterinary, horticulture and fisheries department will jointly inspect the dams and canals along with members of Water Users’ Association and provide a report so that the dams and canals are modernized with modern technique.

Public Participation- The concept of public participation is provided in the irrigation projects. To ensure the cultivators participation in the water management, the state government has enacted “Madhya Pradesh Sinchai Prabandhan mein Krishakon ki Bhagidari Adhiniyam, 1999”. The modernization of the irrigation projects will increase the productivity of water for the beneficiaries who will be the members of the Water User Associations. The modernization of dams and canals will strengthen the Water Users Association’s and will provide help in the economic prosperity for cultivators.

Agriculture- The agriculture department will provide modern agricultural techniques to the cultivators resulting in financial benefits to them. The investigation of soil in the fields will provide the type of soil and available elements which will help in the selection of appropriate seeds for additional production of food grains. The cultivators will be informed about modern techniques, optimum quantity of fertilizers and pesticides. The training for using organic fertilizers and vermi-compost will encourage their use to the beneficiaries. The cultivators will be educated through on-field demonstrations and will be informed about the equitable use of irrigation water. Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishva Vidyalaya, Jabalpur will provide new inventions to the cultivators.

Horticulture- There is a considerable increase in the business of fruits, vegetables and floriculture. It provides quite a considerable income in a small area of cultivation. The cultivators will be provided with modern techniques in regard to fruit-fields (orchards), and will be provided with saplings. The training for growing the fruit saplings will also be provided through cooperatives. The cultivators will be provided with detailed trainings regarding medicinal plants including vegetables, spices and the methods of growing them.

Fisheries- The physical and chemical quality of water will be tested on the basis of which fingerlings of big fishes will be poured in the reservoir .Duck-farming and poultry farming will be encouraged along with fish farming. The quality of fish-fertilizers will also be improved so as to make fisheries a profitable business.

Animal Husbandry and Veterinary-

People would be imparted training in latest modern techniques of animal husbandry. Besides adopting measures to improve breed of animals, milk trade would be promoted. Animal husbandry and poultry would be developed as profit making business. Rears would be well informed with relevant information on cattle diseases, vaccination and so on.

Social and Environmental Works-

Women’s participation would be ensured in the Madhya Pradesh Water Sector Restructuring Project. Women along with farmers would be apprised of benefits of good environment and its conservation. Women’s role in other activities would be ensured.

New concept of Madhya Pradesh regarding water management would set an example before many other states.

Phil Morahan

Described as a "Legend", "The Man of the Moment" and "Morahan the wonder", he is well known for his drunken exploits often involving the law and offence. ALways the one to make drunken speeches, ideas and puns, often closer inspection he is nothign but a chauvanistic twerp. Meeting him on several occasions, i was astonished with his somewhat stupid explanations for the meaning of life and several incidents occuring during the 20th century. Through the foolowing incidents i hope to convince any reading that he is not the image he appears but a bumbling fool not worthy of ones time and effort.

Always one to ignite a simmering incident, the pinnacle of his stupidity was occured on the 14th of June, where a harmless Thursday turned into a nightmare. Writing off his fathers car, he was quick to "claim" the incident to all concerned. Whilst showboating through the tragic bents of Grays Point, he lost control and crashed headlong into a concrete wall. Habouring the future Australian baseball champion in the passenger seat, my daughter claims he returned a shadow of the cocky man he was.

Perfecting the "naked streak", he has displayed this trait on many occasion often discusting my daughter, me and my friends through his blatant disregard for clothes. Unfortunate enough to see his streak through cronulla mall, his arrest was timely and neccessary.

I was also very distressed to see this boy on the cover of our "Sutherland Shire Leader". Praying daily for the stressed students, i was outraged to thins this immiture boy sporting a shirt with the slogan "No Politics. Just Parties." Making a mockery of the HSC, my daughter was also dissapointed at the lack of thought the leader put in into selecting such a boy.

In short my family and i dislike the boy with much malcontent. Seen as a "god" to some he is nothing but a dissapointing failure... I write this to warn any, that if u are to croos his path do not waste time with this devil child. You have been warned.

Sughayer, Born on 16-10-1993, he started playing the piano at the age of 5 years continuing his studies at the NMC - National Music Conservatory - in Amman-Jordan,with his teacher is the Piano composer and the conductor of the Amman Symphony Orchestra, Muhammed Othman Sidiq, who started with Iyad at a very young age, Iyad participated in many concerts outside jordan like Italy, Luthuania, and Cyprus, but in 2006, Iyad had a full scholarship to enter the Tchikovsky Conservatory in Moscow- Russia, but unfortunatly his young age couldn't let him live there by himself.

Victor D Thorn. A potted history

Victor D Thorn Was born in Woolwich London in 1951. He was was moved down to Southampton in Hampshire almost immediately and put into a home for children. He was not reunited with his family until he was three. He was schooled in Eastleigh and from 1967 until 1970 had a variety of jobs. These included being an apprentice electroplater, door to door salesman and postman.During this time he joined an amateur dramatic society called Eastleigh's Theatre in the Round. On June the 1st 1970 Thorn joined the army and for the next five years served with The Parachute Regiment. During this time he served in Northern ireland (four tours, Malaysia,United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Denmark and Germany. He then transfered to The Royal Military Police serving with the corps from 1975 until 1977. During this time he served with AMF land forces in Northern Norway. He was then transfred back to Northern Ireland in 1976 and stayed there until leaving the military in 1977. He then joined the Royal Ulster Constabulary. His probation was spent serving at Springfield Road and Andersonstown in West Belfast.He was then appointed to B Division DMSU, he resigned from the RUC in 1982 and returned to England. From 1982 until 1989 he was a freelance bodyguard and security consultant, during this time he did a video with Queen (friends will be friends), looked after Cliff Richard for a week in Northern Ireland (1988)and was for two years security conroller for the Miss World competition. In 1993 Thorn decided to go back to college and obtained an HNC in computing followed by a BSc(Hons)in Business Information technology.He was invited to remain at the Southampton Institute as a Part Time lecturer. In 2000 he was appointed a full time member of the academic staff of the faculty of Technology in the now Southampton Solent University. During his time as a student he again took up acting and between 1995 and 1997 completed two films, 'Sudden Fury' and 'Helix'. He is at present (2007) filming 'A Day of Violence' and appearing at the Tongue and Groove festival in Portsmouth. During his life Victor has been married three times and has three children, Victoria (f33), Regan (f17) and Cydni (f9). He still teaches at the Southampton Solent University and lives with his partner Jane in Ashford in kent.

Partido Separatista de Color

In 1912 Cuba, the Partido Separatista de Color led by Evaristo Estenoz and Pedro Ivonet attempted to establish a separate black republic in Oriente. The movement was a failure and General José de Jesus Monteagudo suppressed the rebels with considerable bloodshed. Historians differ on this circumstance, some view it as a racial merely matter, others as an attempt at racial cleansing and secession on part of the Black activists. Although U.S. troops were standing by they did not participate in the action.

Purace: A Metaphor of Social Change in an Andean Community.

   INTRODUCTION

On September 17, 1990, the inhabitants of the town of Purace (in the Southwest of Colombia) were surprised by a new fire in the sulfur mine "El Vinagre", located on the slopes of the Purace volcano. This fire was the sixth in the last ten years. The fire caused major problems in the economic life of the Puracenos because most of them worked at the mine.

The fire burned for 66 days. It destroyed most of the mine and expelled sulfuric gases around the area. It burned the vegetation and many of the cattle, birds and rodents died. Many of the Puracenos required medical attention for respiratory ailments and treatment was given at the local health centers or the hospital in Popayan (the capital city of the State of Cauca). The mining company lost approximately $200,000 US dollars.

On September 17, Industrias Purace S.A., the mining company, called an emergency meeting to plan the best way to help the people and to avoid any further damages, and panic. They had many ideas in regards to this accident. The most important decisions were to install temporary health centers, to print brochures about disaster prevention, and to distribute anti-gas masks, etc.

I participated in the meeting, and afterwards, the president of the company asked my opinion on how to avoid panic in the region. Based on my experience with the Puracenos and my knowledge of their traditions and rituals I answered: "When the volcano is angered it is necessary to bring San Miguel, the local religious patron, in procession." My proposal was to hold the annual San Miguel's procession before the traditional date of September 27th. My suggestion was based on the Puraceno's beliefs that "San Miguel could calm the volcano's anger because he was the only one capable of that, in past fires."

My comments were received very skeptically at the meeting. It was impossible for Industrias Purace management to think that San Miguel's procession calm down the fire's anger.

On September 19, while the non-Indian employees were working on this plan, the local Workers Union had a meeting with the company's president and directors. To the management's surprise the Union's directors demanded an earlier San Miguel's procession as a measure to calm down the fire. The board of directors accepted the union's demand. On September 20th the procession was held and stretched for 15 miles long, from the town of Purace to the mine.

1. PURACE.

The town of Purace sits in the southwest part of Colombia, in the State of Cauca, on top of the Cordillera Central (Central Mountain Chain). Most of its population is indigenous; approximately 19,000 inhabitants.

Most of its territory is formed by mountains with soft slopes, deep canyons, and plateaus. The topography is comprised of soft, deep and fertile soils formed by a volcanic cover. The varied topography includes the Sierra de Los Coconucos, the Pan de Azucar volcano, the Purace volcano (the sixth highest mountain in Colombia with 4.700 meters over the sea level) and the Sotara volcano. There are many rivers and creeks such as the Cauca river (the second largest river in Colombia), Molino, Anambio, etc., whose origins are on the top of the mountains.

The forests disappeared during the Colonial and Republican period when the development of cattle and agricultural farms took place. The vegetation is characteristic of the transitional land between the mist forest and the "paramo" (the thermic floor between 2.400 and 3.000 meters over the sea level).

Agriculture was the principal cause of the modifications in the landscape (Drennan, 1985:114). This region shows evidence of extensive ancient agriculture, possibly since pre-Columbian times. This evidence can be observed on the many threshing floors which exist there. The floors are separated by flutings which are potential proof of a possible high population during the pre-Columbian era when the main economic activity was agriculture.

During the Colonial and the Republican periods, and during the first half of the present century, the Puracenos' economy was based on cattle and agriculture until the founding of the sulfur mine in 1942.

Actually, the Puracenos are now Spanish-speakers, but they were Purace-Coconuco-speakers until the first half of this century. Information relating to this is found in most of the Cauca's chronicles written during the XIX century (e.g. Humbolt, Hamilton, Mollien, Mosquera, Vergara, etc.), and in some from this century (e.g.: Lehmann, Rowe, Otero, etc.).

At the present time the Puraceno's housing is based in the traditional Hispanic architecture, but before the 60s and 70s it was possible to find their own architectural designs. There are several descriptions about it in ancient and modern publications. Sometimes it is possible to find old Puracenos houses close to the town. These houses are built on stone foundations which were made over ditches. The walls are made of adobe. A wood structure supports the straw roof. Generally, these houses consist only of one rectangular room. The kitchen is a separate building connected to the house. The floor is merely of soil.

Old medicine practices still persist in the Purace community. They are based in the use of plants for the treatment of diseases. The medicine men, called "Macucos" are present today in Purace. In 1990 there were 17 medicine men. Each medicine man teaches a traditional school of medicine to young people. Some rituals are present today in the medicine man education process, e.g. the initiation ritual of future "good" medicine men take place in a little lagoon close to San Rafael lagoon. There, the students take a bath and drink aguardiente (a local liquor) with coca, and other plants; then they go to a cave in "Cerro Negro" mountain or in "Cushma" mountain, where they spend the night praying. To be a medicine man the young man needs to have a supernatural sign indicating that he "has a strong spirit", and "eyes to see" the supernatural world. Generally, this sign is a dream or a vision during sleep.

The cultural spaces in the Puracenos life are governed by an Andean basic rule: the relation between "Hot" and "Cold."

Their human behavior and their social relations are divided between hot and cold; there are people whose "blood" is hot or cold. The best for the Puracenos is to be in the middle; it avoids passion, violence, and non-desirable behaviors.

In their material culture a good example is the house; it is built with materials that have hot-cold properties: the foundations are made in stone, a cold material; the walls and the roof are made in adobe and straw, both hot materials.

In their economy the main source of commerce is sulfur. It comes from the coldest place in Purace: outside the volcano, but it also comes from the hottest place there: inside the volcano.

In their spiritual culture the world is governed by creatures from both environments, hot and cold. The devil, the main spiritual creature, is the hottest. He lives inside the volcano where he has his "balcony home." "The Widow" or "the Mountaineer Hunter" are spiritual forms whose domains are in the coldest places and times: the paramo and the night.

Their medicine practices (a part of their spiritual life) are governed by hot-cold relation too. To treat cold diseases is necessary to use hot plants. To treat hot diseases is necessary to use cold plants. E.g. the "susto" ("scare") or the "mal Viento" ("bad-wind"), a cold disease, is necessary to treat with "yacuma", a hot plant available in the Paramo, the coldest place. High fever is treated with cold plants as "colecaballo" or "coca", etc.

Today the region and its population is influenced by the mining exploitation of sulfur. The mine is located in the slopes of the active Purace volcano, a mountain that has spiritual importance in the live of its community.

The sulfur mine was founded as a result of the regulations that the Second World War imposed on the transportation of war materials. At this time the sulfur was considered a war material. The mine became the main economic activity of the region, replacing agriculture and cattle. It had a major impact on the Puracenos life, in their economy, their religious life, and their culture.

The main object of this research is to know the Puraceno's emic view of the cultural impact that the mine caused in their lives. Also, this work attempts to understand how the Puracenos have integrated the presence of the mine in their economy, their material culture, their social life, and their spiritual culture.

The theoretic point of view belongs to cognitive anthropology. It tries to establish the Puraceno's general thoughts about the mine, and to establish the social behavior generated from such thoughts.

The method was the participant observation. It refers to the search for specific terms and experiences related to the mine.

The ethnographic time was 1990.

2. THE WORLD BEFORE THE MINE.

The next topics address the Puraceno's tales about events, experiences and specific terms related to the mine. They also show the Puraceno's worldview and their relationship with the mine, and its impact on that worldview.

This first section shows tales and stories about the time before the mine was founded.

THE CREATION.

"God created a flat world where he left plants, animals and soil. It was a world designed so humans could live there."

"Thousands of years after the Creation, volcanoes like the Purace were formed. There were many volcanic eruptions which destroyed the flat world created by God. Volcanic eruptions produced big holes where water appeared. The water accumulated and flowed down to other holes creating canyons, valleys, mountains, and all the world that we have today. The constant flow of the Vinagre river destroys the earth with its dirty water."

THE PURACE VOLCANO.

"The Purace volcano is the devil's house, his "balcony house." It's the "true hell", the reason why Purace means "Mountain of Fire." The volcano is where the devil keeps his wealth; and he must protect it always. He is the owner of everything in the world, he rules in all places. Now, his wealth is the sulfur that he takes from the mine; in the past his wealth was the ice that people sold in Popayan. Today the ice does not exist because people can walk to the top of the volcano."

THE PARAMO.

"The paramo is angered when people visits it. In the past it was covered with a lot of snow and gray clouds that formed a "Black Shadow". The "Black Shadow" is the storm announcement, and it is named "The Female Black Phantom", the "mother" of the storms, thunders, and rains. The Female Black Phantom can look like a black dog or a black cat."

"The paramo is the home of many animals including the blackeye bear (tremactus ovucitos), the deer (mazama rufina), the tapir (tapirus pinchanque), the "guagua" (cuniculus fuscater), the vulture (vultur griphus), the wild turkeys (chamaepetes goudotti), the "paletones" (aulachoryncus prasinus), the trout (salmo guarnierii), etc."

This is a good place to visit, but it is difficult to get there because the lagoon becomes angry when people walks close by. If the lagoon knows that people or medicine men need to visit, it becomes easier to reach. When the lagoon is angered it is necessary to put salt inside its waters, and to pray."

"The Vinagre river comes from the paramo also. It forms three falls near the town of Purace: the Vinagre Falls is where "the Mountaineer Hunter Ghost" sometimes appears. During Holyweek at the San Antonio Falls, San Antonio appears embracing a child. At the Nuns Falls during Holyweek, three nuns appear over the mountain in back of the fall."

THE MINE SITE.

"Long time ago an astronomer (probably Alexander Von Humboldt) spent a night on this site. He told our ancestors that in a future day the volcano could erupt and its lava could reach the city of Popayan. It would destroy the city, and would transform it into a lake."

"In ancient times this site was a forest, where many animals lived. When people started to climb the volcano, they constructed the "Chuquion" trail. They went to the volcano and to the mine site to hunt animals such as tapirs, deer, armadillos (dasypus novecintus), and birds. Also they brought ice packed in straw, to sell in Popayan. Later a big pasture was made for cattle. More than 500 bulls and calves were breed there. The cattle was community property. Many times cattle disappeared, but not due to wild animals or theft by robbers, but because the volcano ate them. When cattle walked around the crater, the volcano expelled a strange vapor that caused the cows to hallucinate and the volcano then ate them."

"While people gave medicine or salt to the cattle, other members of the same family bathed in the Vinagre river, or ate on its shore. At that time the Vinagre river water was clearer and hotter than it is now."

"When people returned to their homes, they brought with them fine wood to make tools and houses."

"The mine was on a flat site close to a sheer rock wall approximately 80 meters high. Over the past 50 years the volcano erupted and destroyed the flat site, exposing the mine, and forming the current site which is no longer flat."

3. THE BEGINNINGS.

"Cornelio Pisso (according to my informant) discovered the mine. He died in poverty, but he was the one who brought the first sample of sulfur to Manuel Mosquera. Manuel took the sulfur to the city of Cali for examination. When he found out that the sulfur was of excellent quality, he decided to look for the mine."

"Near the San Juan thermals Manuel smelled sulfur. He walked for a long time, following the smell, until he discovered the first sulfur deposits in these thermals. The sulfur was brought to Purace, where Manuel put it in an oven and discovered the high quality of the sulfur."

"Manuel and five men explored the area. They started at San Juan thermals, continued to "Paramo Chiquito", until they got to the "Alfombrado". Manuel carefully examined all the sulfur deposits, but he didn't find the sulfur quality that he needed. At the end of the journey, he was tired and without hope. He became separated from the group and walked around the volcano slopes looking for flowers and animals."

"As Manuel was walking in the "Alfombrado" a strange man approached him. The man told Manuel that he would show him where the sulfur was, so that Manuel could open a sulfur mine, if Manuel would repay him with the souls of future laborers. Manuel didn't believe him because he had already searched without any luck. However, Manuel accepted the man's proposal because he had not explored the other side of the volcano for fear of wild animals."

"The man asked Manuel to point his rifle at the wall of rocks. Manuel shot the rifle and where bullets hit the rocks, sulfur immediately flowed. Then, the man told Manuel that this was the exact place to build the mine. This is the actual mine site today."

"The man who appeared to Manuel was the devil. To start the mine activities Manuel had to sign a pact with the devil."

"To open the mine the workers started to excavate the rocks until they discovered fire and sulfur. From those location Manuel took the first amount of sulfur for industrial use."

"That sulfur was "cooked" in "pots" for the first time at Carlos Orozco's home. They used wood fired ovens. Later Manuel installed a "glass-oven" at Rosa Roja's home in "Chichiguara". Later they transported the "glass oven" to the "Compartidero." The sulfur was carried on their backs, and later by mules."

"Many people worked at the oven. Some people crashed the sulfur rocks, others shopped firewood, and some carried the sulfur on their backs. Men, women, and children worked there."

"Due to the difficulty of transporting the sulfur on their backs, Manuel built a road to the mine and moved the ovens there."

4. LIFE DURING THE MINE ERA.

The information on this section is divided in the following cultural spaces: social life, economy, material culture, and spiritual culture.

SOCIAL LIFE.

"The people who lived in the towns migrated to the city, and the people from the countryside moved to the towns. The mine changed our way of life. People learned mining and how to operate the machines. For that reason many Puracenos became truck and bus drivers. Only after the mine was operating were schools opened in Purace and in the surrounding countryside. Teachers came from the city and students came from the rural areas."

"The poor people who worked at the mine spent their newfound wealth on alcohol and felt important for the first time. Many became alcoholics."

"Girls from Purace married men from other cities and towns who came to work at the mine".

"In 1977 the miners went on strike. The town was deserted, and became a virtual ghost-town. At that time only women lived in Purace, because the men had to go out to work in the city. The men also went to work in farms, driving trucks, or buses. This was a time of hunger in Purace" ECONOMY.

"The mine brought a new way of life: people forgot agriculture and many plants and agricultural products disappeared. The soil changed, and new agricultural diseases appeared. Their transportation changed because the mine brought cars. All the life changed."

"At the beginning the mine was a source of progress because people did not have to work in agriculture to earn a living and they had a paycheck every month. However, when the town grew, and many people were unemployed, some of them tried to go back to farming but they had lost their knowledge of farming. The land had also changed, the soil was bad, and the pastures were burned by sulfur. Some foods that were produced at the Purace farms before the mine, are impossible to produce now."

"The market disappeared because people preferred to buy foods and goods at the city market. People forgot their past life."

MATERIAL CULTURE.

"Long time ago Purace was a poor town with straw-houses. After the mine era: the straw-houses disappeared and also the old trails. People purchased building materials at the city, and the houses were built using brick and cement. Old trails were replaced by new roads built by the mine company."

SPIRITUAL CULTURE.

Most of the Puraceno's tales about the mine refer to supernatural beliefs. The mine is often linked to the metaphysical world more than the material world. The mine is linked to many supernatural beings such as the devil, Manuel Mosquera, San Miguel Arcangel, the Widow, The Ghost Car, The Colored Mule, The Mountaineer Hunter, etc. The next section will discuss three of the above beings.

THE DEVIL.

"He is the most powerful of all spirits. Sometimes he is a good spirit and sometimes he is bad. When he is bad, he punishes the people. When he is good he gives goods to those who make a pact with him. He is a demon or "coco", and he is so powerful that he can kill anyone he wishes to kill."

"The devil lives inside the volcano which is his "balcony house." He is a tall black man with red eyes. He always walks down the volcano slopes, or in the tunnels of his property."

"He rented the mine to Manuel. To sign the leasing contract, Manuel met with the devil for several days in a dark room. That contract was valid only for a few years, and has now expired. Manuel didn't return the mine to the devil, and for this reason the devil burned the mine five times. Manuel forgot that the devil rules all places and things."

"When the devil is trying to burn the mine, he comes down on the volcano riding on a reddish mule. That mule looks like a dragoon because it prenths fire from its nose and mouth."

"Sometimes the devil predicts someone's death. Then, he comes from the volcano in the form of a "guando." After six p.m. The "guando" is the devil turned into many devils. They walk in procession on the trails carrying the body of the person who will die. The "guando" always carry the body over their shoulders and in one hand they hold blue lit candles. Sometimes they ask people to help them to carry the body. The procession finishes at sunrise and many people are shocked that they have carried a body all night without their knowledge. To predict the death, the devil can appear anywhere in the mine, accompanied by the mine's engineer."

"The devil has a car, "the phantom car", and it is a noisy car with a multitude of lights and a black cape. The devil and Manuel use this car to go to the city to take the money from the mine to the Governor's Office. They leave at 10 p.m. and return at 12 p.m."

"The devil has many black dogs guarding the mine during the night. They are bad dogs with fire in their red eyes and flames coming out of their mouths."

MANUEL MOSQUERA.

"He was a strong worker. He did not have to eat much in order to work hard at the mine. He was a poor man and he had many debts when he started working in the mine. To be able to pay off his debts, and to develop his mine projects, Manuel sold his soul and his employee's souls to the devil."

SAN MIGUEL ARCANGEL.

"He is a tall white man who lives in the hay fields at the paramo. He looks so respectable and beautiful that if a Puracenan girl is pretty, people will call her "San Miguel."

"San Miguel is the saint patron of Purace. His holiday is on September 27. If people don't celebrate his holiday San Miguel burns the mine and causes earthquakes. When San Miguel is angry all bad things happen and then it is necessary to hold the San Miguel's procession".

Velvet Fruit, The

The Velvet Fruit were a pre-grunge rock band based out of Norfolk, Va. The band was formed in 1988 by three Old Dominion University college friends that shared similar musical tastes. Each band member assumed aliases as a joke during their practice sessions, and decided to keep the names for their live gigs. (Larry Hoyt (Gary Pogharian)-Bass and Vocals, Fred O'Neil (Donald Kroeller)-guitar and backing vocals, and Nami O'Suma (Mike Namisnak)-dums). Though the band originaly played under the names: James T and the Kirks, The O'Knows, and Moonlight Cruise; their final band name was dereived from the flipant comment made by musical contemporary Todd Sherritt that the band was "as smooth as velvet fruit" after one of their moonlight cruise sets playing onboard the Spirit of Norfolk (where they got their only live exposure).

Though the Fruit did not cut a CD in these pre-CD times, they did release 3 45rpm singles printed at the exclusive Granby Street Personal Recording Company 210 Granby Street, Norfolk, VA: "Daughter in the Backseat/No means Yes...I Guess," "Gay Transformers (Robots into Guys)/Shaved Fruit," and "Street Whites/Tele-Chubbies." The band made an appearance in two publications: Rock Flash, December 1988 in at "September's Christmas Bash" and The ODU school newspaper, Mace and Crown April 1989.

Chicago City Datum

The Chicago City Datum is a vertical datum used by the City of Chicago and related agencies for the referencing of survey and geographical information systems data. It is defined by the Chicago City Clerk to be a plane 17.640 feet below a benchmark on the Northern Trust Company Bank Building. Specifically, the benchmark is cut on top of the bottom stone of the southeast corner of the Building. The Building is on the northwest corner of S. LaSalle St. and W. Monroe St.

It is alternatively defined as 579.48 feet above the 1929 mean sea level, also known as the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 (NGVD 29).

Hans Kooistra

Hans Kooistra has over 30 years of experience in the field of process management. He is an industry veteran who has worked for Rank Xerox, Bull (17 years, of which many years at the headoffice in Paris) and Tibco (later Staffware). Before joining VisionWaves he was Vice President and Regional Director Tibco Benelux, former Staffware.

JON PYKE

Jon Pyke has over 30 years experience in the field of software development working for a number of software and hardware companies as well as user organizations. He was the Chief Technology Officer and a main board director of Staffware Plc from August 1992 until Tibco acquired the company in 2004. While at Staffware, he was responsible for a development team geographically split into two countries (USA and the UK) as well as for product strategy and positioning, including the design and development of the IProcess Engine.

Jon Pyke also founded The Process Factory with the aim to deliver on-demand BPM technology. He acts as a non-executive director for a number of public and private software companies. Jon Pyke is a frequent speaker at international events and has written and published a number of articles on the subject of office automation, BPM and workflow technology. Most recently he has co-authored a book published by Cambridge University Press and titled, “Mastering you Organization’s Processes,” covering both technical and business aspects of BPM. John Mozeliak

John Mozeliak is the interim General Manager for the St. Louis Cardinals of the MLB. He took over for former GM Walt Jocketty when he and the Cardinals parted ways. In his first few moves as general manager, he re-signed Russ Springer, a relief pitcher for the Cardinals, picked up Jason Isringhausen's 2008 club option, re-signed Joel Pineiro, and is now aiming toward David Eckstein, the Shortstop.

Viva el Birdos, a Cardinals blog, suggests that Cleveland Indians' assistant GM Chris Antonetti is a likely full time GM candidate, although Mozeliak was promised a job in the organization by chairman of the board William DeWitt, Jr.

Major General John Liu Fugh (Ret.) was the first Chinese American officer to be promoted to the rank of General in the United States Army and its first Chinese American Judge Advocate General. He was JAG from 26 July 1991 to 30 September 1993. Retiring from active service, he became partner at the law firm of McGuire, Woods, Battle and Boothe, and has subsequently held executive positions in subsidiaries of McDonnell Douglas, Boeing, and Enron International in China.

Fugh is a graduate of the the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and the U.S. Army War College. He received his J.D. from George Washington University Law School and is called to the bar in the District of Columbia.

Magana, Mark David

Formative Years

Mark David Magana was born on March 28, 1980 in Newport Beach, California and was raised in nearby Fullerton, California. He attended St. Angela Merici School in Brea, California from 1986 to 1994, and Fullerton Union High School from 1994 to 1997. To date, Magana has not completed any postsecondary education or recieved a collge degree.

Business

Currently Mark Magana heads Magana Property Group, LLC, an Orange County, California based real estate investment company. Magana Property Group, LLC is known to have real estate holdings in at least four states; California, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Ohio. Under Magana's guidance, the company shifted its focus from North Orange County residential properties to commercial net-leased properties shortly before the mortgage meltdown and real estate bubble hit Orange County, California hard in 2007.

The Future

Magana remains active in real estate and is currently involved with cell tower land leases in northern New Mexico. He is expected to begin development on commercial properties in Youngstown, Ohio in 2008. He is also expected to enroll at nearby Youngstown State University to pursue a degree in business. Youngstown's depressed real estate market and declining population should pose Magana with unique difficulties.

Charles Perrin

Charles Richard Perrin, born oct. 18, 1981. He was born on the streets of Compton( near the beach man), Delaware. He grew up selling crack cocaine to midgets and amputees. He made it big when he learned how to cook his own product, then he got shot 8 and 3/4 times in the pancreas. He spent 26 1/2 in a coma afterwards and his family worked to pay off his staggering medical bills. When he awoke he said very abruptly, "If you aint talkin money, you aint talkin'." and then followed that with, "these doctors are white as hell, and they need to get themselves some shoe polish.

Halfway to Hell Motor Club

History: The Halfway to Hell Motor Club started as a few teens in the northwest Illinois town of Rock City that rode snowmobiles together, but over the years their membership has grown. Today they are one of the largest motor clubs in the area and have gained a reputation as a rough lot.

Membership: Although the true member ship is unknown sources have estimated it to be somewhere between 50 and 200. This number is vague due to the reclusive tendencies of the group as a whole. To become a member you must be approached by an existing member and go through an extensive initiation.

Vehicles: The Club, as it is known to locals, started with snowmobiles but eventually branched off to high performance American cars and motorcycles, most of which are foreign sport bikes.

The Orella Family and Orella Adobes in Santa Barbara County

On August 17, 1993 the Santa Barbara Board of Supervisors declared County Landmark status for the two Orella Adobes at Canada del Corral on the Gaviota coast just north of Santa Barbara. The property, now owned by Exxon Corporation and originally part of the vast Ortega "Nuestra Senora del Refugio" ranch, passed to the ownership of Don Bruno Orella and his wife Dona Mercedes Gonzalez y Guevara in 1866. It was part of Don Bruno's large landholdings in the region and remained in the hands of his descendants until the property was sold to Exxon in 1971. While owned by Ortega descendants it was a frequent center of social events and played host to numerous travelers, including John C. Fremont in 1847. There are two adobes, part of which may trace back to the late 18th century, as a tile was found during a remodel in the 1930s with the year "1798" on it. When the Orellas purchased the adobes, they became their country residence and one of the buildings served as schoolhouse to their children. A tutor was hired to live on the ranch. (Interestingly enough, the town home site of the Orellas on the main street of Santa Barbara is also on the National Register of Historic Places. It is known officially as the "Janssens-Orella-Birk Building") Don Bruno's daughter, Elena Orella Covarrubias, inherited the adobes and remodeled them in the 1930s in Spanish Revival style. Oil was found on her land in 1926 and the El Capitan oil field was one of the richest in the state at the time. Don Bruno Orella came to California at the time of the Gold Rush. He was born in the Basque country in Spain in 1830, descended from an ancient noble family whose members had fought in the Wars of the Reconquista in the Middle Ages. He married Mercedes Gonzalez y Ladron de Guevara, who descended from some of the earliest Spanish settlers in California. The couple established a prosperous farming/mercantile family with extensive holdings throughout the Santa Barbara/Ventura region. They were devout Catholics and patrons of the local Catholic churches and religious orders. All sons of the family attended Santa Clara College and to this day there is an Orella Prize given at that university to the student with highest grades in the sciences.

Uyzor

Uyzor is an alliance rogue in World of Warcraft on the realm Darksorrow (EU).He is often seen trolling the tradechat and has therefore been classified as a fungus beacuse he is believed to live in symbosis with the Darksorrow trade and general chat. Supposedly originated from Sweden. Has been Affiliated with the Outcast guild (Alliance).

Brass10

Since its formation at the Royal College of Music in 2001, Brass10 has built up an enviable record of competition success and an impressive list of recordings and broadcasts. Based on the formation of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, Brass10 continues the work of this pioneering ensemble by performing throughout England and abroad and helps to educate young people in brass chamber music.

Repertoire

Brass10 performs a selection of repertoire associated with the PJBE as well as commissioning works from British composers including Joseph Horowitz and Simon Dobson. Also they perform as a big band with a rhythm section providing music for corporate events for the Royal Over-Seas League, TOTAL fuel, the Royal College of Music, the Royal Hospital in Chelsea & the High Sheriff of West Sussex.

Appearances

Brass10 has appeared at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields and Buckingham Palace for Her Majesty the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Celebrations. Brass10 has also performed at the Cheltenham International Festival of Music, Halesworth Arts Festival, Etchingham Festival and the Regent Hall Brass Arts Festival together with numerous live broadcasts and recordings for the BBC including their own show on BBC Radio 2.

Awards

Since 2004 Brass10 has won the Royal Over-Seas League Ensemble Competition and Miller Trophy for its excellence in performance, and the Philharmonia Orchestra/Martin Musical Scholarship Fund Outreach Award for its work in education. The group has also won support from South East Music Schemes and a residency at the Royal College of Music as the Leverhulme Group Junior Fellowship Ensemble.
