alpha-maltose 1-phosphate + [(1->4)-alpha-D-glucosyl]n ⇌ phosphate + [(1->4)-alpha-D-glucosyl]n+2

The enzyme from the bacterium Mycobacterium smegmatis is specific for maltose.
