Template:Short description In higher category theory in mathematics, a bisimplicial set is a simplicial object in the category of simplicial sets, which themselves are simplicial objects in the category of sets. Many concepts from homotopical algebra, which studies simplicial sets, can be transported over to the study of bisimplicial sets, which for example includes Kan fibrations and Kan complexes.

Definition

Bisimplicial sets are simplicial objects in the category of simplicial sets ๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญ, hence functors ฮ”opโ†’๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญ with the simplex category ฮ”. The category of bisimplicial sets is denoted:

๐›๐ข๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญ:=๐…๐ฎ๐ง(ฮ”op,๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญ)โ‰…๐…๐ฎ๐ง((ฮ”ร—ฮ”)op,๐’๐ž๐ญ)

Let pr1,pr2:ฮ”ร—ฮ”โ†’ฮ” be the canonical projections, then there are induced functors pr1โˆ—,pr2โˆ—:๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญโ†’๐›๐ข๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญ by precomposition. For simplicial sets X and Y, there is a bisimplicial set XโŠ Ywith:[1]

XโŠ Y=pr1โˆ—(A)ร—pr1โˆ—(B),
(XโŠ Y)m,n=Xmร—Yn.

Let ฮด:ฮ”โ†’ฮ”ร—ฮ” be the diagonal functor, then there is an induced functor ฮดโˆ—=diag⁡:๐›๐ข๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญโ†’๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญ by precomposition. For a bisimplicial set Z, there is a simplicial set ฮดโˆ—(Z) with:[1]

ฮดโˆ—(Z)n=Zn,n.

Adjoints

The diagonal ฮดโˆ—=diag⁡:๐›๐ข๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญโ†’๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญ has a left adjoint ฮด!:๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญโ†’๐›๐ข๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญ with ฮด!โŠฃฮดโˆ— and a right adjoint ฮดโˆ—:๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญโ†’๐›๐ข๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญ with ฮดโˆ—โŠฃฮดโˆ—.[2]

Let K be a simplicial set. The functor KโŠ โˆ’:๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญโ†’๐›๐ข๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญ has a right adjoint:[3]

Kโˆ’:๐›๐ข๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญโ†’๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญ,(KX)n:=Hom⁡(KโŠ ฮ”n,X)=lim←ฮ”mโ†’KXm,n.

The functor โˆ’โŠ K:๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญโ†’๐›๐ข๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญ has a right adjoint:[3]

โˆ’K:๐›๐ข๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญโ†’๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญ,(XK)m:=Hom⁡(ฮ”nโŠ K,X)=lim←ฮ”nโ†’KXm,n.

Model structures

Model structures from the category of simplicial sets, with the most important being the Joyal and Kanโ€“Quillen model structure, can be transported over to the category of bisimplicial sets using the injective and projective model structure. But it is more useful to instead take the analog replacements of the morphisms โˆ‚ฮ”nโ†’ฮ”n and ฮ›knโ†’ฮ”n, which are:

โˆ‚ฮ”mโŠ ฮ”nโˆชฮ”mโŠ โˆ‚ฮ”nโ†’ฮ”mโŠ ฮ”n,
ฮ›kmโŠ ฮ”nโˆชฮ”mโŠ โˆ‚ฮ”nโ†’ฮ”mโŠ ฮ”n,
โˆ‚ฮ”mโŠ ฮ”nโˆชฮ”mโŠ ฮ›knโ†’ฮ”mโŠ ฮ”n

and which lead from Kan fibrations to bifibrations, left/right fibrations to left/right bifibrations, anodyne extensions to bi-anodyne extensions, left/right anodyne extensions to left/right bi-anodyne extensions and Kan complexes to Kan bicomplexes.[4]

Properties

  • The diagonal functor ฮดโˆ—=diag⁡:๐›๐ข๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญโ†’๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญ send left/right bi-anodyne extensions to left/right anodyne extensions.[5]
  • The diagonal functor ฮด!:๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญโ†’๐›๐ข๐ฌ๐’๐ž๐ญ send left/right anodyne extensions to left/right bi-anodyne extensions.[6]
  • For simplicial sets X and Y, one has an isomorphism of slice categories:[1]
    (ฮ”ร—ฮ”)/(AโŠ B)โ‰…ฮ”/Aร—ฮ”/B,
    ฮดโˆ—(AโŠ B)โ‰…Aร—B.
