4-oxo-4-(pyridin-3-yl)butanal + NADP+ + H2O ⇌ 4-oxo-4-(pyridin-3-yl)butanoate + NADPH + H+

The enzyme has been characterized from the soil bacterium Pseudomonas sp. HZN6.
