Summary
| DescriptionSARS-CoV-2 Cicada (BA.3.2) variant.svg |
English: Amino acid mutation map for the SARS-CoV-2 Cicada (BA.3.2) variant, plotted on a genome map of SARS-CoV-2, with a focus on the spike protein region. Some of the mutations in the ORF1ab region are missing from the map (starting at the Nsp3 gene). The rare mutations (0.01% prevalence, at the time of discovery) are marked in red, while the antibody resistance mutations are marked in blue. This variant was nicknamed the "Cicada" variant, due to the similarities between the virus's emergence and the namesake insect's long underground period. This variant is also known as BA.3.2 and B.1.1.529.3.2, and it was the third major antigenic shift COVID variant to emerge during the COVID Pandemic, following the Pirola Variant 2 years earlier, and the Omicron Variant 4 years earlier. Similar to the original Omicron Variant, BA.3.2 was a hypermutated variant that likely originated from a chronic illness patient in South Africa, descended from the Omicron BA.3 lineage that was last spotted in early 2022. This mutation map was manually generated using the Stanford University Coronavirus Antiviral & Resistance Database Pattern Analysis Report's custom map generator. Sequencing data was obtained from Cov-Spectrum. |
