Summary
DescriptionNysa-polana-albedo-inclination.svg
English: A plot of proper elements of 2,608 asteroids in the Nysa-Polana complex of asteroid families, showing semi-major axis on the x-axis and inclination (in degrees) on the y-axis, highlighting the albedo of each asteroid as its color. Diameters of each circle are proportional to the diameter of the asteroid.
The Nysa-Polana complex consists of at least two subgroups of different asteroid spectral types and brightnesses. The top of the plot shows at least one family of darker B- and C-type asteroids, including 142 Polana and Eulalia. The bottom of the plot at lower inclination shows a family of smaller, primarily S-type asteroids in orange; this has been referred to in literature as the 135 Hertha or NysaS family. Confusingly, 44 Nysa is an E-type asteroid and does not belong to the complex or either subgroup.
Important orbital resonances are marked on the top of the plot; from right to left, these are the 3:1 Jupiter resonance (yellow), the 1:2 Mars resonance (red), and the three-body resonance involving the mean motions of the asteroid, Jupiter, and Saturn.
