Die lateinische Inschrift am Sarkophag lautet:" Was du bist, war einst ich; was ich bin, wirst du einst werden" - ein Hinweis auf die Vergänglichkeit aller irdischen Existenz. So wollte es der Auftraggeber, vermutlich Lorenzo Lenzi, sehen. Er kniet links als Stifterfigur und rechts seine Frau.
Der Fluchtpunkt liegt auf der Mittelachse unterhalb des Kreuzes. Dargestellt ist der Blick in eine Kapelle mit wuchtigem kassettiertem Tonnengewölbe - eines der ersten mit Hilfe der Zentralperspektive gestalteten Bilder des Quattrocento in Italien.
Hier ist die Stelle, wo die imaginären horizontalen Linien sich treffen.
