English: A series of images representing the magnification achieved by the Event Horizon Telescope to produce its debut image of the supermassive black hole of M87. The top-left image approximates the field of view of the human eye from Earth. Each successive image (moving counter-clockwise) is magnified ~19.3x that of the previous, closing-in on the position of the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) of Apollo 16, and ending at the top-right with the black hole image (which is, coincidentally, at almost exactly one-billion-power magnification relative to the first image).
The second-to-last step is of John Watts Young next to the LRV of Apollo 16 (because I found no useful bird's eye view of the moon at that zoom level) scaled appropriately so that the view is wide enough for about half the wheelbase of the LRV (as calculated for this step). The famous black hole image is artistically superimposed in Young's glove, as though he were holding a tennis-ball sized black hole. 19.3x per step was calculated from dividing the angular diameter of the Moon by that of the ring around M87's supermassive black hole, respectively, 34 arcminutes and 40 microarcseconds[1], and then taking the 6th root of that value (since there are 6 zoom steps after the whole-moon-only step). |
