Title: Research and patenting activities in solid-state batteries have grown significantly in recent years but remain a niche within the broader field of battery technologies. Figure 5.1 shows the number of scientific publications and patents related to solid- state batteries published annually from 2010 to 2023. The data show a steady increase in the number of scientific publications over time, but patenting activity is more prevalent. Analysis of patents for solid-state batteries also reveals an increase, with the number of published patent families having grown from only 290 back in 2010 to over 2000 in 2023. However, compared to overall patenting activity in battery technologies, solid-state batteries have remained a niche research area, so far.
