Vanoccio Biringuccio Sennese. Con privilegio apostolico et de la Cesarea Maesta et del illustriss. Senato veneto. by Vannoccio Biringucci (1480-1539?) Veneto : Venturino Roffinello, 1540.

Title page with woodcut border illustrating uses of "pyrotechnics" in mining, smelting, and artillery.

Central text is surrounded by drawings of apparatus, with alchemical figures at head and foot.

Far from being merely an esoteric pursuit of solitary scholars, alchemy played an essential role in important commercial enterprises. Burgeoning commercial investment in mining fed a surge in metallurgical publications.
