Fails WP:NFCC #1 and #8. The concept of a mushroom power-up is not copyrightable (as copyright protects expressions and not ideas), and the image could be replaced with a power-up from a free game (like the egg from SuperTux) without a significant harm to the reader's understanding of the concept. I contend this deletion - the alternative you propose (the egg from SuperTux) has nowere the same cultural impact as the Mario's mushroom. Now if you could find an alternate free mushroom power-up that has been portrayed in merchandising througout the whole world, providing references that it will be instantly recognized as a gaming power-up then your deletion proposal would have same weight, but that's simply not the case. I disagree that File:Supermushroom.png fails #1 and #8 of WP:NFCC. I've given rationales based on the popularity and historic relevance of the images that no other free image could met, and have sourced them accordingly.

#1 (No free equivalent) requires that the free replacement would serve the same encyclopedic purpose; the SuperTux power up would not provide the same encyclopedic purpose and would not be of "acceptable quality". Unless you can provide references of free images with equivalent cultural impact and historic relevance, the existence of power-up free images is not enough to claim that #1 is not met - they would simply not "have the same effect".

As for #8 (Contextual significance), again File:Supermushroom.png is THE number one representation of the power-up. It's presence as the most significant example should go uncontested unless very good sources are provided to the contrary. Diego (talk) 18:53, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Since I don't think I stated my position clearly, I will re-present it.

The first alternative is to use a free drawing or illustration of a mushroom, with the current caption (possibly modified to say something like "A stylized mushroom, like the one shown here, allows Mario to become Super Mario. It is one of the most well-known power-ups in all of video games"). While we cannot replicate the exact design of the Super Mario mushroom or replicate essential characteristics of it, there is no copyright in the concept of a mushroom itself, even if it is strongly associated with Super Mario Bros. Because this image serves as a free replacement for the nonfree image that does not sacrifice the contribution to enhancing the reader's understanding of the article, the image in question fails NFCC #1 and #8

The second alternative is to use a power-up from SuperTux, such as the egg or fire flower. Because SuperTux is licensed under the GPL, it is possible to create free screenshots. I argue that it is not necessary to show the most-recognizable power-up; rather, any suitable illustration that clearly demonstrates the concept will suffice. In light of such a substitute image, the current image fails NFCC #1 and #8.

I understand your point, I'm afraid I'm the one who hasn't stated my position clearly. I'll try to explain it with a metaphor. Suppose we apply your argument to Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup I: "the concept of a can of soup is not copyrightable". What you say is akin to replacing Andy Warhol's painting with a stylized can of soup, and say that "a can of soup like this one was made famous by Andy Warhol". Either that, or replace it with a freely licensed photography of a supermarket aisle with a pile of cans.

tl;dr version - compare it with the portrait of a smiling woman. Assuming it was not yet in the public domain, should we replace that one in this article with a free photograph of a woman with a smile and say "he painted one of these"?

In summary, the encyclopedic value of showing Super Mario Bros. Mushroom, and not any other mushroom or power-up, is because of the impact in popular culture of that particular power-up, that no other one can reflect. Using the words of the Campbell's Soup fair use rationale: it "shows how the image depicted is familiar to the general public". It makes no sense to replace one cultural item with another obscure one that serves the same functional role; the first one has encyclopedic value and is significant to the topic on its own, which makes it irreplaceable. I agree that Warhol's Campbell's Soup cans paintings can satisfy NFCC on Andy Warhol. Replacing such an image with a mock-up of a soup can would not be a Warhol work and would thus fail in accurately depicting the work of the artist who is the subject of the article. Likewise, the article on Surrealism includes a picture reproduction of Magritte's The Treachery of Images, which is nonfree. There, the justification for including the image is to accurately show the contribution of a major painter who was historically important in surrealism. Further, in History of Eastern role-playing video games, several non-free images are used, because the games that are significant to the history of the development of the eastern RPG are not free and are illustrated in the article to call out the distinguishing features. However, compare Video game genres, which has no nonfree images, even though there are many iconic games in each genre (Final Fantasy in RPGs, for example). Instead, screenshots from free games are used to illustrate the article. This is a close case, I realize, but I think that power-up is closer to Video game genres than History of Eastern role-playing video games. Games with power-ups are a dime a dozen, and an image from such a game that is free serves the purpose of showing to the reader what a power-up looks like in a game. Certainly, if the Mario mushroom somehow ended up in the public domain, I would choose that as the image; as it stands though, it is nonfree and replaceable by a free image. Even if that free image is less desirable, it still effectively serves the purpose of illustrating to the reader what a power-up looks like in a video game. Your point about Video game genres would be more appropriate if we had a separate article for "History and cultural impact of power ups". If we had it I would agree to move this image to the top of that article. Since it doesn't exist, this one must cover that aspect and thus has to show the cultural impact of the Mario's Mushroom. Thus your points about art are applicable ("a mock-up of a [mushroom] would not be a [Supermario's power-up]" and "including the image is to accurately show the contribution of a major [gameplay element] which was historically important in [videogames]").
At most there's an argument that a direct screenshot of Super Mario would represent this historic item better than the official promotional material provided by Nintendo. But it would also be non-free so it means nothing to this discussion, and I prefer this image since it's the one used by the source that references it as significant.

While the description is correct that there are unlikely to be any free screenshots of power-ups from games circa 1980, the article does not go into detail about the history of power-ups. Rather, the image appears in a section about offensive power-ups. Ignoring the possible copyright issues of using a bands/Media group logos. These image are unused (except for a userpages that are also up for deletion) and have no encyclopedic value as these bands/Media groups don't even have a page as these bands fails WP:Band. This is actually a PNG file with an SVG extension and it is a dupe of File:XlinkRecessive.png which has the correct extension. Stefan2 (talk) 23:57, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

And if you look at the previous versions (some of them are SVG), you'll see that they just link to file:///C:/Users/Martin%20W/Documents/Downloads/XlinkRecessive.jpg and file:///C:/Users/Martin%20W/Documents/Downloads/XlinkRecessive.png which are supposed to be displayed by the SVG renderer. Since the URLs obviously only work on one computer and since they don't seem to point to SVG files in the first place, this seems to be a useless SVG file. --Stefan2 (talk) 11:07, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
