Dawn of Man

Template:Afc r

The Dawn of Man is the name of the firt chapter in the science fiction novel "2001 A Space Odyssey" by Arthur C Clarke The central theme in the novel is about the evolution of human intelligence. In the case of 2001, human intelligence is initiated and directed by an alien intelligence, as transmitted by a mysterious black monolith. The dawn of man chapter contains a scene where the "ape-men" are influenced by the monolith to pick up a bone "tool" to slay an animal for food. This primitive tool represents the first step in human intelligence as no other species has this capability. This is well emphasized in the film version of 2001 as the bone tool is thrown upward by the ape-man, and then turns in to a space ship as the scene jump cuts foward perhaps half a million years. The Dawn of man scene was also parodied in the first scene of Mel Brook's History of the World Part I

12 Months (Sekai meisaku dowa mori wa ikiteiru)

Template:Afc r

12 Months is an anime film, released in 1980. While it is a relatively unknown film, it has gained a little notice over the years. It was written and directed by Kimio Yabuki.

Plot

Anya lives with a cruel stepmother and stepsister. On New years Eve, the queen of the land, who is quite spoiled and demands anything she wishes right away, offers a reward of a basket of gold coins to any person who can bring her galanthus flowers, although the flowers bloom in springtime.

Hearing this, Anya's sister and mother fling her out into a terrible snowstorm to find the flowers. Anya despairs, knowing she will freeze to death before finding flowers of any kind, much less the galanthus. Deep in the forest, she encounters the spirits of the 12 Months of the year, who are impressed with her sweet nature and politeness. They invite her by their fire and April presents her with an hour of Spring so she may find the flowers. As she leaves, April gives her a ring that, should she throw it and call "Roll along, roll along ring! Pass through the gate of spring, pass through summer, pass through autumm, over the carpet of winter without any fear! Roll up to the door of the waiting new year!" and the ring will bring her back to them. The make her promise to keep their meeting a secret and Anya promises, grateful for her life and the gifts they've given her.

Upon returning home, the queen insist Anya tell her where the flowers are. Anya resists, keeping her promise, despite an entire royal party trying to force her to tell. The queen asks for more flowers and Anya returns to the 12 Months, this time followed by her step sister who marks the way with a handkerchief. Now when the queen asks again, the sister and monther declare that they know where the flowers are and Anya is dragged along with them. They come upon the site, but he 12 Months are not there. The queen, frustrated, takens Anya's treasured ring from her and threatens to throw it away if she does not tell her where the flowers are, but Anya remains silent. As the queen throws the ring, Anya cries out her verse. The 12 Months suddenly appear, cause a wind that blows the guards away, and spirit Anya off. The mother and sister are turned into dogs and it seems the queen and her remaining royal party are going to be left to freeze in the snow. Suddenly, the 12 Months appear once more with Anya in a fabulous sleigh and warm fur coat. Although teh queen has wronged her, Anya offers an extra coat and ride in the sleigh to the queen. The queen adopts her as her sister and Anya is finally able to be happy.

Niamh Perry

Template:Afc r

Personal

Niamh Perry (born 10th June 1990) is a singer and actress from Bangor, N. Ireland who first came into the public eye when she was selected as one of the 12 finalists for the BBC1 programme "I'd Do Anything"[2]. The youngest daughter of two school principals, Niamh attended Our Lady and St Patrick's College, Knock[3] but left school during her A-Levels to move to London for the filming of "I'd Do Anything".

Vocal Training

Niamh's vocal ability was first noticed by her primary school music teacher. When she began Grammar school, the 11 year old Niamh was asked to sing a solo at the annual Christmas concert. The fact that "such a big voice could come from someone so tiny" left the audience gobsmacked and it was as a result of this performance that the College's music department encouraged Niamh to have her voice classically trained. Niamh received vocal coaching from Deborah Stewart and in 2007 achieved a Distiction in her Grade 8 classical singing exam, for which she won the SEELB Outstanding Achievement Award for Contribution to the Arts[4].

Musical Theatre History

Niamh began her training at McMaster's Stage School in her home town of Bangor. However, February 2005 saw the establishment of Music Theatre for Youth[5] (MT4UTH)in Northern Ireland and it was here that Niamh's passion for Musical Theatre was fuelled. With this company, Niamh participated in productions of Oliver!, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Sweet Charity, Guys and Dolls and West Side Story. She was also a member of the Company's Showcase group 'Footlighters'. She participated in two Cinemagic productions under the direction of Suranne Jones. Niamh gained lead roles in both productions. Niamh sang a solo at the re-opening of the Grand Opera House in Belfast.

Other Achievements

In February 2008, Niamh was the face of an NSPCC campaign encourage adults to call the NSPCC Child Protection Helpline if they are concerned about a child's welfare[6]. Niamh also recorded a CD for charity with two school friends, going under the group name 'Paradis'. The CD became a word-of-mouth success in Northern Ireland, and was played on several local radio stations. 'Paradis' were twice invited to sing live on BBC Radio Ulster.

I'd Do Anything

In March 2008, Niamh was announced as one of the final 12 contestants in the BBC1 programme "I'd Do Anything". The programme premiered on 15th March 2008 and aimed to find a performer to play Nancy in the West-End revival of the hit musical Oliver!. On the first live show (29th March 2008), Niamh sang 'The First Cut is the Deepest' and was described described as 'concise' and 'a great actress'. Niamh was also told she had the look and presence of a young Bernadette Peters and it was also suggested that she could originate the role of Wednesday in The Adams Family musical[2]! Niamh sang 'I've Got The Music In Me' on the second live show (5th April 2008). Judge John Barrowman described the performance as "wicked, outstanding and wonderful. Absolutely spot on!". Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber agreed, stating "you're just extraordinary. You put the vamp back into vampire for me."[2] During the third live show (12th April 2008) Niamh sang 'Moon River' from Breakfast at Tiffany's. The show's panel were suitably impressed, with Judge Denise Van Outen declaring "It was a beautiful performance, I loved the fragility of it." John Barrowman agreed, "your fragility could redefine the role of Nancy, it was very emotional and precise".[2]

Adiabatic Circuit

Template:Afc r

Adiabatic circuits are a class of low-power circuits where the aim is to minimize the energy cissipated rather than power. These circuits derive their name from adiabatic process in thermodynamics. In applied physics, an adiabatic process is defined as any process that is asymptotically isentropic (thermodynamically reversible), that is, whose total entropy generated tends towards zero in some appropriate limit (typically, of low speed).Adiabatic circuits are based on this principle.

Principle of operation

In conventional CMOS circuits the output of a digital circuit is made logical '1' or logical '0' by either charging a load capacitance to the supply voltage through a pull-up network or by discharging it to ground throuhg a pull-down network.During a complete charging and discharging process, an amount of energy equal to CV2 is used up.That is,the movement of charges across the voltage source is cause of energy wastage.Instead of discharging the load capacitor to ground terminal,if it is discharged to the power supply then the energy used over one cycle can be made less than CV2.This discharging of the capacitor charge to power supply is possible only if the power supply voltage goes below the capacitor voltage during discharge. For this a time varying power supply normally reffered to as power clock is used. The power clock may have a Triangular or Trapezoidal waveform. There are two main rules to be followed when designing an adiabatic circuit. 1.Never turn on a transistor if there is a voltage difference across it 2.Never turn off a transistor if current is flowing through it.

The triangular or trapezoidal power clock waveforms do exactly this. The ramp in such waveform ensures that the capacitor charges with a constant current.Theoretically making the duration of charging or discharging longer gives more energ efficiency.

Drawbacks

Adiabatic circuits suffer from limitations on speed of operation. With increasing speed the underlying operation is no longer adiabatic and even if it is adiabatic the outputs obtained are not satisfactory.

It has most of the features you expect from a Web server, for example a module for executing CGI scripts, a reverse proxy (allowing to use it together with another Web server), data compression, access control ... It is really easy to extend it by writing new modules in Objective Caml.
  • a module called Eliom to write very dynamic Web sites using high level concepts. The goal is to implement complex behaviours in very few lines, and to ensure that the program is correct using static typing. In particular, one can choose a module for validating pages statically, that makes quasi impossible to generate pages that do not respect recommendations from the W3C. It is made possible by using the powerfull type system of the Objective Caml language.

Ocsigen is used by several projects of content management systems, like Lambdium, Nurpawiki and Ocsimore.

Among Ocsigen's authors are several research workers in computer science (programming languages) who use the project as a basis for their research.

Marshall Latham Bond

Template:Afc r

Marshall Latham Bond was born at Orange, Virginia in 1867

and died in Seattle, Washington in 1941. He was the son of Judge Hiram Bond and Laura Ann Higgins. Marshall Bond was a cowboy, mining engineer, stock broker, real estate broker and outdoor guide. He was married to Amy Louise Burnett daughter of Charles Hiram Burnett and Jeanette Campbell McLean.

During the Klondike Gold Rush 1897 to 1898 Marshall Bond and his brother Louis Whitford Bond owned a log cabin, storage building and tent ground on a hill overlooking Dawson City. One of their tenants during the Fall of 1897 and part of the Spring of 1898 was a young man who did chores on a labor exchange for one of their tent spaces. This was author Jack London. The main character of the novel "The Call of the Wild" Buck was based on a dog the two brothers owned.
