  • curprev 18:3918:39, 30 January 2025 imported>Em3rgent0rdr 67,847 bytes +67,847 deleting "like an abacus" because https://www.britannica.com/technology/abacus-calculating-device says "The introduction of the Hindu-Arabic notation, with its place value and zero, gradually replaced the abacus, though it was still widely used in Europe as late as the 17th century." which was about the same time slide rules were invented...so it seems more likely that people around then were evaluating addition with positional base-10 number arithmetic on paper rather than using abacus.
