At the very least, it is unreferenced. But in fact, it is well-established that bulk properties, in the thermodynamic limit, are independent of the details of the boundary conditions for a wide variety of systems. Finally, there are certain systems and properties for which boundary conditions do matter, and these have been extensively studied.
