Its discovery by the [[LHCb experiment|LHCb Collaboration]] was announced on 6 July 2017 in [[Venice]], [[Italy]], at the [[European Physical Society]] Conference on [[Particle physics|High Energy Physics]]. <math>\Xi_{\rm{cc}}^{{++}}</math> is the first baryon discovered with two heavy quarks (charm and/or bottom) and a light quark. Its mass is 3621 MeV, nearly four times that of the [[proton]].<ref>(CERN, European Organization for Nuclear Research 2017)<br>

It was identified when it disintegrated into a <math>\Lambda_{\rm{c}}^{{+}}</math> [[Lambda baryon|baryon]] and three lighter [[meson]]s, [[Kaon|K{{Sup|–}}]], [[Pion|π{{Sup|+}}]] and π{{Sup|+}}.
